Job Summary: Independently manages all aspects of the book review section for the five annual issues of the American Historical Review (AHR), which has been the journal of record for the historical profession in the United States for more than one hundred years and is one of the most prestigious scholarly journals in the world.
Works with Editorial Assistants to commission ~200 book reviews for each issue; and edits the reviews in Microsoft Word, working closely with reviewers in the process, and proofreads the typeset review sections. Categorizes the reviews and compiles the book review section in appropriate order; and trains and supervises seven Editorial Assistants in duties such as selecting reviewers for books, working with faculty consultants, doing preliminary copyediting, checking facts, and proofreading the edited reviews.
Establishes, implements, and enforces policies for the book review section of the AHR; and preempts and/or solves any and all problems relating to the editorial phase of the book review section. Position is based in Bloomington, but travels to vendor locations as needed to resolve problems and implement changes; and represents the AHR at professional meetings.

REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree, two years of scholarly editing experience in the field of history, and comprehensive publishing experience.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
Broad and deep knowledge of history and historical scholarship; strong editorial skills; and reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Windows; and experience with library databases and in-house databases. Possess or be able to quickly develop a good understanding of the technical aspects of the specialized software used by compositors and printers. Familiarity with and experience with all aspects of publishing, from creative processes to technical applications to administrative procedures.
Preferred: Advanced degree in history.
