Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate must meet one of the following criteria:
1. Master’s degree or higher in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition from an accredited college or university; OR
2. Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND a Master’s degree or higher in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism from an accredited college or university; OR
3. Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
4. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above. (Applicants making application on the basis of equivalency must submit the Supplemental Application for Equivalency Determination form in addition to all other required materials.)
Experience Required:
1) Minimum of two (2) years of recent and successful experience teaching postsecondary English composition.
2) Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desired Qualifications:
1) Training and recent, extensive experience in classroom instruction of transfer-level composition, research-based writing, and critical thinking.
2) Knowledge of current research in composition and rhetoric and its practical application to writing instruction.
3) Experience working in a writing center based on a philosophy of process-centered writing.
4) Experience teaching students with diverse levels of academic preparation, learning abilities, learning modalities, and language development.
5) Evidence of an understanding of the diverse ways in which the needs of students are met on a college campus, including through faculty leadership positions, committee representation, and collaboration at the department, school, college, and district levels
6) An earned or expected PhD in English (Rhetoric and Composition, Literature, or Creative Writing) from an accredited college or university.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, instructing classes (may include day and evening hours) in (1) transfer-level research-based writing and critical thinking, and/or college writing, and/or pre-college writing and/or basic skills; (2) the college’s Writing Center; and (3) literature (on occasion). Additional duties include the following: advance student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines and with established Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs); participate in the development and revision of curriculum, in department and college committees, and in professional development activities; maintain current knowledge in the subject matter and in effective teaching and learning strategies; maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; participate in general faculty functions related to the educational program, in-service programs, and professional development; and maintain appropriate records and grades.
