The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy located at IUPUI, seeks to fill an endowed chair in the area of community philanthropy. A significant record in the area of community philanthropy, community capacity and/or community building is required. The preferred candidate would have research interests in community foundations and their role in civil society locally, nationally, and globally. A Ph.D. is required but the disciplinary field is open and may be in anthropology, economics, history, nonprofit management, political science, public policy, sociology, or other related fields. Teaching and research experience in philanthropic studies (broadly defined) or related area of interest is strongly desired.
The chair is expected to teach and mentor students at the doctoral, masters and undergraduate levels for 50% of their time. The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy offers an inter-disciplinary degree in philanthropic studies that attracts diverse students interested in broad issues related to philanthropy, including nonprofit organizations, social movements, grassroots associations, foundations, giving and volunteering. For the other 50% of their time the chair is expected to conduct research, publish in the field, and provide service to the School, campus, and the field. The chair is expected to maintain an active research agenda. An advisory committee comprised of academic and practitioner leaders in this field, will be available to support the chair and help develop a research and teaching agenda for the chair’s work in this space.
Located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the Lilly Family School builds on the strength of Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy. For 27 years, the Center has been a leading institution in the world of philanthropic studies. In 2012, the Trustees of Indiana University created the nation’s first School of Philanthropy, which now has an $80 million endowment. The School of Philanthropy collaborates closely with the IU School of Liberal Arts and with the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs. By the fall of 2015, there will be 20 core (core meaning 50% or more FTE in the LFSOP) faculty members in the School and an additional 50 affiliate and adjunct faculty from 21 disciplines that teach and conduct research in the fields of philanthropic and nonprofit studies.
