The Department of Art and Art History at the University of Alabama currently seeks to appoint faculty to fill three positions:
1. A faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of African American art with a sub- or co-specialty in the art of the broader African diaspora. Expertise in African American art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is preferred, with the ability to teach a broad temporal range of material desired. This is a tenure track position. Primary instructional responsibilities include teaching existing and developing new courses in the history of African American art and art of the African diaspora, as well as graduate seminars in area(s) of specialization. Ph.D. in African American or African Diasporic Art/Visual Culture required; a record of successful teaching (beyond the graduate teaching assistant level) and its assessment; commitment to integrating new technologies in teaching; evidence of ongoing research; experience in developing and teaching undergraduate courses in African American Art and/or visual culture of the African Diaspora; encouraging interactive classroom learning; and an active professional record.
The University of Alabama is home to the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art, a nationally renowned collection with a focus on twentieth-century African American art, and the successful candidate will serve a pivotal role in developing and sustaining faculty, student, and community engagement with that collection. Other responsibilities include advising students; participating actively in the graduate program; developing and maintaining a strong record of scholarly research with publications and service to the profession; and engaging in departmental, college, and university service.

2. A full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, for a Clinical/Lecture Track Faculty member in Studio Art Foundations, beginning August 2015. This position emphasizes teaching and service and carries no expectation of research. The initial contract is for three years with the potential to be renewed. This position is eligible for promotion to Associate and Full CLTF Professor.
We invite applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds who have a strong commitment to teaching excellence. Application materials should focus on drawing and 2D design, but may include 3-D skills, and/or emerging areas like installation, digital, or performance art. The teaching portfolio should indicate that the candidate is well-versed in methods and theories of studio art instruction, and familiar with the social, political, and cultural concerns of today’s classroom.
Clinical/Lecture-Track Faculty hold renewable term positions that are not tenure earning. The successful applicant will teach Drawing I and Design I. Other responsibilities include: advising and mentoring undergraduate students; facilities management; serving at the department, college and university levels; community outreach and program recruitment. We seek an individual that is committed to teaching within the context of a department dedicated to engaged learning, undergraduate and graduate research, and contemporary art practice.
Required qualifications: M.F.A. or PhD. in any studio art discipline; minimum one year of college-level teaching experience as instructor of record (GTA experience will be considered); demonstrated teaching experience at the introductory/foundations level; demonstrated familiarity with traditional and contemporary approaches to teaching studio foundations.

The Department of Art and Art History offers the BA and MA degrees in Art History and the BA, BFA, MA and MFA degrees in Studio Art. Important University teaching resources include the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art, the Sella-Granata Gallery, and the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art.
3. A full-time, nine-month position for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art in Digital Media, beginning fall semester, 2015.
We invite applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds who have a strong commitment to teaching excellence, creative activity and scholarship, and university and community service. The successful candidate will play a central role in developing curriculum for a rapidly evolving and diversified media area that includes courses in digital arts and graphic design. The candidate’s primary creative engagement should be within digital media, with particular emphasis in areas such as 2-D digital art, multimedia, installation, time-based media, digital video, interactive platforms, mobile applications and social computing. An established exhibition record that demonstrates a high level of professional engagement with contemporary practice is essential. The applicant should be well versed in the theory of digital/new media pertaining to contemporary practice. The candidate should be committed to all levels of teaching from introductory to graduate practice.
Required qualifications: Master of Fine Arts degree in digital media or related field; minimum two years of university or college-level teaching experience beyond graduate student teaching; evidence of active exhibition record and scholarship; demonstrated excellence and recognition of dynamic ongoing creative research that can build towards tenure; evidence of success in college/university teaching in the areas of Digital Media or New Media.
