The Department of Government and International Relations was the first politics department at an Australian university. The department has a very active research program with considerable success in attracting research funding and engaging in interdisciplinary projects.
The department is seeking to appoint a scholar to manage a major research project on Electoral Integrity.
Elections in many countries are commonly marred by a variety of problems and as elections have spread to almost every country around the globe, including many non-democracies, the issue of electoral integrity has generated growing concern.
As part of this appointment your research will focus upon three main questions to shed new light on these issues:
- When do elections meet international standards of electoral integrity?
- What happens when elections fail to do so?
- And what can be done to mitigate these problems?
Your responsibilities in this role will be to:
- conduct research on electoral integrity, as part of the team, and manage and coordinate the team operations under the supervision of the Project Director (Professor Pippa Norris)
- help shape the overall strategic vision, goals and research outputs for the project
- write and edit working papers, journal articles, edited books, and professional publications for conferences, meetings, and workshops, including organising the annual Electoral Integrity Project workshops
- manage the project budget and financial records
- manage the visiting fellows and interns program
- coordinate communications with the University, including the Head of Department, the school and the faculty
- appoint and supervise occasional part-time student research assistants
- help to organise and run regular (monthly) research seminars to present work-in-progress
- contribute to the intellectual life of the department through participation in local events, talks, and seminars.

To be successful you will need:
- a PhD dissertation which is defended before January 2015 in Comparative Politics, Political Science, Law, International Relations, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Studies, Political Sociology, Political Economy, Social Sciences or a related field
- research interests in the quantitative study of comparative politics and elections
- advanced skills in research methods and the use of standard statistical packages (Stata, R, or SPSS)
- a publication record in peer-reviewed international journals
- professional skills in editing, writing and research
- experience and demonstrated skills in managing collaborative teams and projects
- excellent analytical, time management, written and oral communication skills
- the willingness to travel internationally and work in a multicultural context
- advanced skills using various standard software packages, including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
Desirable for appointment is your:
- familiarity with use of social media
- knowledge of a language other than English.

Remuneration package (Academic Level B): $110,802 - $131,575 p.a. (which includes a base salary of $93,629 - $111,182 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
