Whittier College, Digital Liberal Arts/Sociology and Anthropology
Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Digital Liberal Arts and Sociology/Anthropology
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | California, United States |
Position: | Post-Doctoral Fellow |
Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Whittier College’s Digital Liberal Arts Center in concert with the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work offer a two and a half year Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on digital scholarship and/or pedagogy in the field of sociology of education or educational anthropology. The Fellow will begin in either Spring 2015 or Fall 2015 and continue for 5 semesters to teach undergraduates and collaborate with faculty across the College’s curriculum to develop and implement digital methods and concepts into teaching and research. Candidates with experience in digital mapping, code writing, leading undergraduate digital research, and/or active participation in digital scholarship communities are especially encouraged to apply.
Bringing digital scholarship to the undergraduate classroom is a key focus of this postdoctoral fellowship. Therefore, the Fellow will teach three courses per academic year, with at least one course per semester. Courses that feature digital scholarship through innovative hybrid pedagogies (but not fully online delivery) are particularly desirable. As part of their regular 2-1 load, the fellow will offer at least one course a year in their specialty within the sociology of education or educational anthropology, focusing on (but not limited to) issues around educational disparities, different “cultures” of education, and research trends in the humanistic social sciences about education and technology in the United States or in their region of interest.
Beyond the classroom, the Fellow will work closely with the Digital Liberal Arts (DigLibArts) team to foster digital scholarship projects and inspire colleagues across campus to explore and extend their use of hybrid pedagogies. This collective goal involves DigLibArts team members in staying current with new developments in digital scholarship, conducting individual and collaborative digital research projects, and building collaborations with other colleges. In short, the Fellow will function in a hybrid capacity, operating both in the classroom and as part of a dynamic team focused on individual, institutional, and regional digital scholarship projects. This Fellowship is intended to serve as a developmental position, allowing the Fellow to prepare for a future career in academia (as faculty or otherwise) while sharing his or her expertise with the Whittier community.
