The Graduate Center's mission is to carry out advanced research and scholarship, to prepare the next generation of scholars for careers in the academy or in culture and public service, and to increase public understanding of both perennial and pressing matters of local and global significance. The people associated with the Graduate Center are thought leaders; out of the charge to nurture and grant advanced degrees from CUNY, the Graduate Center assembles an extraordinary community of almost 2000 scholars from scores of disciplines, and two dozen institutes and centers address areas of special interest and concern. The Graduate Center is literally the axis of New York's collegiate learning. This year, our 4500 graduate students will teach 7700 courses throughout CUNY to more than 200,000 undergraduates as part of their training.
Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Development Corporate and Foundation Relations Director (Institutional Giving) will lead and expand the Graduate Center's grants program which encompasses foundation and corporate grants. The Director plans, implements, and directs diverse short and long term strategies to support the submission of grant applications; actively recruits GC faculty for participation in the grants process, consistent with the Graduate Center's mission; trains grant applicants in proposal writing; facilitates inter-disciplinary responses to specialized requests for proposals; drafts proposals; acts as liaison between the Graduate Center, Research Foundation, and the sponsoring agency or corporation in completing the application process; and coordinates with other University offices concerned with similar matters and on project proposals involving more than one institution.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Report to and works closely with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to manage a portfolio of foundation, corporate, and government prospects and their activities.
- Direct and coordinate a comprehensive fundraising strategy with the 25 principal foundation supporters and 25 principal corporate supporters of higher/graduate education, and to connect these with appropriate programs and centers for cultivation, proposals for support, and reporting and stewardship of grants.
- Identify, cultivate, and maintain long-term relationships with local and national corporations and foundations.
- Responsible for research on potential foundation, corporate, or government funders of Graduate Center priority programs, centers, and Graduate Center or Graduate Center Foundation activities and events, bringing these to the attention of administrators, faculty, and other leaders.
- Monitor and evaluate progress toward goals; provide statistical reports on an ongoing basis and as requested.
- Establish meaningful, collegial working relationships with development colleagues and other Graduate Center office. Understand the roles and responsibilities of their offices and coordinate activities of the different offices to facilitate the best possible relationships with foundations and corporations.
- Develop, evaluate, and assist in planning and/or directing appropriate cultivation events or programs that involve the Graduate Center President, Foundation Board, senior faculty and administrative staff, and volunteer leaders.
- Write or assist in drafting proposals, brochures, newsletters, pamphlets, and other materials as necessary; draft acknowledgement and other correspondence as needed to enhance relationships with foundations and corporations.
- Identify and participate in special events and recognition and stewardship programs as appropriate. Assist with publicity arrangements for significant gifts, programs, accomplishments, or events as appropriate.

General Duties
Directs College corporate and foundation relations strategy and operations.
- Designs, develops and oversees strategic program to secure corporate and foundation funding for various College initiatives
- Responsible for meeting specific goals and targets
- Develops funding strategies, assesses outcome of strategic plan, and refines approaches to meet priority objectives
- Oversees a portfolio of corporate and foundation donors to establish and sustain ongoing relations; cultivates new prospects
- Maintains relationships with sponsoring organizations to promote and maintain funding
- Ensures reporting requirements are completed in timely and accurate manner
- May develop proposals for institutional, academic, and arts grants
- Manages professional and clerical staff
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.
Other Qualifications:
The preferred candidate should have:
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in fundraising and fundraising management (as part of the required 8 years' related experience) with proven track record in gifts from foundations and/or corporations, and entrepreneurial spirit in developing new sources
- Track record of building donor relationships and negotiating five-, six-, or seven-figure gifts
- Demonstrated ability to analyze grant proposal requirements to identify critical components, and effectively and comprehensively address those critical components in grant submissions, while relating Graduate Center mission to funding goals and opportunities
- Strong coordination with related Office of Sponsored Research, charged with knowledge of various government agency and sponsored program requirements and practices; ability to acquire working familiarity with the research regulatory environment and the requirements for compliance
- Competency in policy review, data collection, statistical evaluation of data, and developing strategies for conveying results to users.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- High energy with enthusiasm, creativity, and organizational ability
- Detail and deadline oriented
- Experience working collaboratively with faculty
- Ability to work productively as a team member
- Competency in MS Office and Raiser's Edge
