The Department of Culture and Society invites applications for the position of research assistant in the palaeoenvironmental humanities. The position is affiliated with the newly established Climate|Culture|Catastrophe Network, an interdisciplinary research and teaching initiative anchored at the Section for Archaeology at the Department of Culture and Society.
What is involved is 25% of a full-time position lasting 2.5 years. It begins on 1.1.2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
The research assistant position involves network and meeting coordination, maintenance of the webpage, outreach work, data management and research assistance for the network’s members as well as (if relevant) minor teaching assignments.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate who is passionate about interdisciplinary research at the human-climate-environment interface, and who has previous experience and/or interest in interdisciplinarity.

Qualifications
Employment as a research assistant requires a Master’s degree in the human or environmental sciences (archaeology, religious studies, geoscience, physics, legal studies), or similar academic qualifications. A relevant PhD degree would be an advantage, but is not a prerequisite.
Applicants must have relevant experience of subjects concerned with human-environment relations. The C3NET activities are interdisciplinary, and the applicant’s background can thus refer to any of the above disciplines. Previous experience of interdisciplinary research would be an advantage.
The applicant must submit a covering letter outlining his/her qualifications and possible ideas on how he/she would contribute to the interdisciplinary environment of C3NET.

The Section for Archaeology
The study of archaeology at Aarhus University is concerned with people, culture and society from the earliest to modern times with a focus on studies of material culture. On the basis of field studies and through empirical, methodological and theoretical approaches from fields including anthropology, history and science, our degree programmes investigate and challenge our understanding of past societies seen in a long time perspective.
Research environment
The study of archaeology at Aarhus University has an international profile and strong research networks. A dynamic research environment provides the framework for large research projects, international conferences and a flow of visiting researchers. The environment is versatile and interdisciplinary, and the academic staff's research competences span topics ranging from war and power, globalisation, family and individual, religion and rituals, landscape and settlement, human evolution, trade and networks, technology and knowledge exchange to the formal and digital representation of material culture.
Degree programmes
There are Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in prehistoric archaeology and medieval and renaissance archaeology. In addition, a variety of elective subjects and events are offered, including the Viking Age Summer University.
Department of Culture and Society
The Section for Archaeology is anchored at the Department of Culture and Society, where the object of research and teaching is the interplay between culture and society in time and space:
