Context
The University of Tokyo is Japan’s premier university. We are currently looking for an adventurous, enthusiastic scholar with a commitment to high quality education to join our expanding international team in the ALESA program.
The ALESS (Active Learning of English for Science Students) and ALESA (for Student of the Arts) programs teach compulsory English academic writing courses at the University of Tokyo for science and humanities students, respectively. In the case of ALESS, all first-year science students design and conduct a simple scientific experiment, which they then write up as an IMRD paper in English. Humanities students research a contentious topic, generally within a theme given by the instructor, and construct an argumentative essay in English. Classes have 15 students on average. From 2015 all students will also take a class designed to improve their ability to engage fluently in oral discussion on academic topics in English. Courses in the ALESS and ALESA Programs are under constant development and improvement through collaboration among all faculty.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD in any area of the humanities, with a very high English proficiency level. Previous experience teaching academic writing or English as a Foreign Language are an advantage.
Responsibilities
The appointee will teach seven 105-minute English courses per week. The courses taught will mainly focus on academic writing for first-year undergraduates in the humanities and social sciences (ALESA), but will also include some courses designed to develop students’ ability to engage verbally in academic discussion, as well as, from time to time, other English language courses as electives. The appointee will also participate in curriculum development.
From 2015, ALESS and ALESA faculty will also occasionally have the opportunity to teach, as elective English courses, classes that focus on specific content in their area of expertise.
Salary
6,000,000 Japanese yen per year. Please note that relocation costs for moving to Tokyo are not covered.
