The Department of Urban Planning and Policy in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Candidates for this position will teach graduate courses in Urban Planning as well as undergraduate courses in Urban Affairs. Appointments will begin August 2015 or shortly thereafter.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in urban planning, urban studies, geography, or public policy and have a commitment to urban research as well as professional planning practice. Priority will be given to scholars who study urban spatial structures, systems, and lived experiences in creative and rigorous ways, who are interdisciplinary in scope, and who have strong visualization and spatial and policy analysis skills. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to innovative graduate and undergraduate education, possess broad knowledge of contemporary planning practices, and show a promising record of research and publication.
The University of Illinois at Chicago serves 27,000 students on a campus located just west of Chicago’s Loop. The Urban Planning and Policy Department, with 200 students, offers two graduate degrees, the Master of Urban Planning and Policy degree and the Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Policy, and one undergraduate degree in Urban and Public Affairs. Concentrations include: community development, economic development, globalization and international planning, spatial planning, environmental planning, and urban transportation. The College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs was created in 1995 as part of UIC’s Great Cities Initiative and houses two academic departments (Urban Planning and Public Administration) and seven research centers: the Center for Urban Economic Development, Great Cities Institute, Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy, Survey Research Laboratory, Urban Transportation Center, Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement and Institute for Policy and Civic Engagement. In addition, the Department operates the Urban Data Visualization Lab and is affiliated with the Institute for Environmental Science and Policy.
