Assistant/Associate Professor of Graphic Design (tenure-track)

Responsibilities for this full-time tenure track faculty position in Graphic Design include: 1) teach 3 courses a term; 2) teach undergraduate design studio and seminar courses from introductory through advanced levels; 3) work with the graphic design area and departmental faculty to provide academic leadership and administrative oversight; 4) provide departmental service 5) maintain a strong professional research agenda 6) advise and mentor students within the major.
Required Qualifications:
MFA in Graphic Design or Visual Communication Design or an equivalent design degree (MFA, MSD, MGD, PhD); fluency in relevant digital tools for print and electronic media; ability to incorporate conventional and emerging technology and methodology relevant to the field; demonstrated knowledge of contemporary design practice, theory, and history; evidence of a strong design research agenda (Assistant Professor level) or proven record of excellence in design research (Associate Professor level), and potential for excellence in teaching (Assistant level) or proven record of excellence teaching multiple levels of design at a university or college (Associate level). Candidates for rank of Associate Professor must meet Department of Art and Design criteria for promotion to associate professor.
Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience in graphic design; command of contemporary design discourse and critical thinking; an established knowledge of communication design including typography, image-making, technology, and emerging concepts and media; expertise in design methodology, design thinking, and design research; ability to address graphic design through the wide array of potential message vehicles; strong working knowledge of the foundations of design; capacity to convey the connections between meaning, context, and form; a broad understanding of the role of design in society, culture, business, and entrepreneurship; demonstrate a vision for the future of design education; interest in assuming an active role in curriculum development; commitment to quality education with a student-centered philosophy; commitment to socially and culturally diverse communities; experience mentoring and working with students from diverse backgrounds; ability to work as a team member.
