The Department of Religion at Williams College seeks to appoint a tenure-track assistant professor in Religions of the Americas, beginning in the fall of 2015. We seek someone with expertise in non-Christian Native American traditions and/or Afro-Diasporic traditions (such as LukumĂ/SanterĂa, Candomble, or Vodou). Within the Americas, geographical area of specialization is open. We invite specialists who look at a particular region or examine transnational connections throughout the American hemisphere (including North, Central, South America and the Caribbean). We particularly welcome candidates who focus on the Americas before 1900. An ability to teach American Christianity is appreciated, but not required.
Candidates may specialize in a range of disciplinary methodologies, but their approach to the study of religion should complement those of other faculty in the department. Candidates will be expected to develop courses in their areas of specialization and periodically to teach the theory and methods survey and senior seminar for the department. Ph.D. should be in hand or expected by September 2015.
