Position: | Assistant Professor, Lecturer |
The Department of Communication at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications to fill three faculty positions effective September 2015, pending budgetary approval.
Position 1: Assistant Professor of Public Deliberation, Civic Life and Director of Debate, entry level tenure-stream. Applicants should be pursuing a research program in public deliberation and civic life that contributes to one or more of the departmental strengths in Public Address and Argument; Media and Culture; Rhetoric of Science; and History, Theory and Criticism of Rhetoric. We seek candidates who can collaborate in remembering and re-inventing debate traditions during this period of dramatic transformations of human communication. The ideal candidate will propose a compelling vision for how to lead one of the nation's most venerable debating societies, the William Pitt Debating Union (WPDU), and possess the requisite skills to collaborate with an associate director and graduate students in realizing this vision. Previous experience in intercollegiate policy debate is welcomed, but not required. Applicants with backgrounds in other formats, such as parliamentary debate, public debate, and Kettering-style deliberative forums are enthusiastically invited to apply.
The WPDU is a co-curricular program that serves as a hub for a wide range of debating activities, including intercollegiate policy debate, public debate, and debate outreach. One of the oldest organizations of its kind in the nation, the Union grew originally out of the University of Pittsburgh's Division of Public Speaking in 1912. Prospective applicants can access a set of historical documents and background information at http://1drv.ms/1gwHZO9 that may be useful for framing an inspiring vision statement that creatively links past, present and future. Priority will be given to scholars who foster engagement, intellectual and cultural pluralism and public issue awareness. We welcome applicants whose research and teaching programs exhibit potential to contribute to undergraduate curricular offerings for the department and the University Honors College. Applicants should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, two article-length writing samples, a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi and course assignments, student course evaluations, a William Pitt Debating Union vision statement, and peer evaluations of teaching. In order to receive full consideration, applications must be received by October 1, 2014.
Position 2: Assistant Professor of Social Politics and Communication Technology, entry level tenure stream. The ideal candidate will pursue the study of social politics and historical or contemporary communication technologies in ways that open possibilities for deliberation, decision-making and change in moments of contingency. We seek candidates who can collaborate in remembering and re-inventing the traditions of rhetoric and communication inquiry during this period of dramatic transformations of human communication. We welcome scholars who foster engagement, intellectual and cultural pluralism, public issue awareness and a concern for social justice and/or human rights. Priority will be given to scholars whose teaching and research programs exhibit potential to contribute to undergraduate curricular offerings for the department and the University Honors College. The candidate's research should complement existing departmental strengths in Public Address and Argument; Media and Culture; Rhetoric of Science; and History, Theory and Criticism of Rhetoric. Appointees will teach current undergraduate and graduate courses, develop new courses in the area of their research specialization, and otherwise participate in the department's intellectually vigorous graduate program. Applicants should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, two article-length writing samples, a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi and course assignments, student course evaluations, and peer evaluations of teaching. In order to receive full consideration, applications must be received by November 1, 2014.
Position 3: Director for Speaking in the Disciplines at the rank of Lecturer, Non-tenure Stream. The person appointed will conduct an interdepartmental faculty seminar centered on Speaking in the Disciplines each term, which is open to faculty from across the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences (see www.speaking.pitt.edu). The successful candidate would also teach undergraduate courses in areas of departmental need and his or her area of specialization. Applicants should submit electronically a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, two article-length writing samples, a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi and course assignments, student course evaluations, and peer evaluations of teaching.
