The History Department in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona), invites applications for a tenure-track position in US History from candidates who have a secondary teaching credential as well as a PhD in history to begin Fall 2015. The position involves supervision of student teachers and mentoring of pre-credential students. Candidates with expertise in 20th century US or early California history are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Position: Primary duties are: (1) teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses in the candidate’s area of specialization, lower-division surveys of US history, and history-social science-related teacher education classes; (2) advising pre-credential undergraduate students, and mentoring and observing student teachers at local secondary schools; (3) participating in activities relating to the mission of the department, the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the university at large; (4) engaging in scholarly activities, including but not limited to research and publication, fellowship and grant programs, teacher-training seminars and other programs; and (5) participating in committee work, community service related to one’s academic expertise, and assignments related to university governance. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in History from an accredited university by September 1, 2015
- Secondary single-subject teaching credential
- Secondary teaching experience in public schools (or other comparable K-12 teaching experience)
- Evidence of ability to work with and mentor a diverse student population
- Evidence of scholarly engagement and potential
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- Research experience or graduate training focused on 20th century US history or California history prior to 1848
- Evidence of effective teaching in a college or university setting
- Familiarity with teacher-training programs in California and with the California History-Social Science Content Standards
- Interest or experience in programs that expand education beyond campus boundaries (e.g., international education or community-based learning experiences)

- a cover letter that describes the candidate’s teaching philosophy, teaching and research experience and interests, and that addresses the duties and qualifications articulated in the position description;
- a curriculum vitae comprised of at least those elements specified on the application form and including the names, titles, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate’s potential for success in this position;
- a completed application for academic employment form;
- a transcript showing highest degree earned (an official transcript will be required of finalists);
- three recent (dated within the past two years) letters of reference; and
- proof of teaching credential required of finalists.
