Position Summary
The Civic Communication and Media Department at Willamette University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in rhetorical studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor starting August 2015. We seek a full time faculty member who will contribute to the Willamette University Civic Communication and Media (CCM) Department through excellent teaching, scholarship and service. We seek a colleague who will hold a Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Rhetoric or a cognate field at the time of appointment and is prepared to teach the department’s core course in rhetorical theory. This faculty member will contribute to the CCM curriculum and can expect to teach the Seminar in Civic Communication and Media, one course in US Public Discourse (CCM 241, 242 or 243), one course in Communicating Effectively in Public (CCM 101, 103, or 201), and at least one course in his or her area of specialization. Given the department’s commitment to examining rhetorics of race, social change, and place, ideal candidates will be prepared to contribute to the department in the areas of African American Civil Rights Discourse and/or Pacific Northwest Public Discourse. The teaching load is 3-2 and the student to faculty ratio is 10.5:1. The Civic Communication and Media Department offers a robust academic program in which students and faculty study rhetorical traditions and significant issues in contemporary civic life. The Department and the College of Liberal Arts value faculty who utilize high-impact pedagogies such as experiential education, who mentor student research, and who themselves model scholarly and public engagement. All Willamette faculty are expected to maintain an active research program, to contribute to general education courses, and to advise undergraduates. Required Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Rhetoric or a cognate field is required at the time of appointment. Applicants must demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and research, as well as the potential to contribute to the department through service appropriate to academic rank.
Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have three or more years of demonstrated college teaching effectiveness, an established research program, and experience in undergraduate student advising and mentorship.
