Research Scholar
Starting date: 1 September 2014
The position is for three years with the possibility of renewal.
(TVÖD E14, comparable to assistant professor/associate professor).
The objective of the research program is to study the transition of the Max Planck Society from its foundation in 1948 until today, combining in the process perspectives of contemporary history with those of the history of science. Based on inter-institutional issues and selected research priorities and key subjects, the dynamic mutual effects of research practice and institutional history will be studied. The focal point is the transition of the Max Planck Society with regards to its operational method and output, its specific character and corporate identity, its networks and competition, its embedding in science, society and politics as well as its approach to international and global challenges. A key issue is the development of scientific knowledge and its reciprocal effects in institutional and societal contexts.
Candidates should have attained a doctoral degree. Evidence of intellectual, and possibly interdisciplinary versatility in the areas of history of science, institutions or twentieth-century social history is requested.
The position to be filled serves primarily the preparation of substantial contributions to the institutional history of the Max Planck Society and to the history of its science infrastructure (laboratories, computer systems, major research institutions, collections, experimental systems). Expertise at the interface of history of science, technology and contemporary history are required. The research contributions to be achieved in this position are expected to be produced both independently as well as in the framework of close cooperation with the research program.
Candidates of all nationalities are encouraged to apply; applications from women are especially welcome. The Max Planck Society is committed to promoting handicapped individuals and encourages them to apply. It is expected that candidates will be able to present their own work and discuss that of others fluently in both English and German.
Candidates are requested to submit their curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a description of their current research projects (research prospectus, maximum 750 words), university certificates of all graduate degrees as well as three letters of recommendation.
