REFERENCE NO. 1605/0713A
The University of Sydney is Australia's first university with an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence, and employs over 7300 permanent staff supporting over 50,000 students. The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning, from its foundation in 1918 as the first faculty of architecture in Australia, has been an internationally acknowledged centre for intellectual, scientific and aesthetic research in architecture and the built environment, which attracts the highest quality applicants in Australia.
Our activities range through architecture, design, planning, art, engineering, IT, science and social sciences and we have the disciplinary range to respond to the great and conflicting challenges of our time – global urbanisation and global sustainability. We also have one of Australia’s best built environment laboratory infrastructures, including the only IEQ Lab (Indoor Environmental Quality) in the Southern Hemisphere and our illumination labs are currently undergoing a major upgrade to respond to new technological opportunities. We have a major and ongoing investment in CNC and digital 3D modelling and fabrication. As well as our scientific and technical capabilities we also have a distinguished record in architectural activism, humanities and intellectual enquiry.
Architecture provides teaching in the undergraduate Bachelor of Design in Architecture program and the postgraduate Master of Architecture program. We have recently established design-based Master of Philosophy and PhD programs in addition to the traditional Master of Philosophy and PhD programs. Key areas of teaching are design, communications, architectural technologies, professional practice, history and theory.
We are looking to make academic appointments at Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer Levels B/C who will make a substantial contribution to teaching and research in architecture. We have recently appointed nine new Faculty members. We now seek at least three highly ambitious new members who want to join our team to consolidate our reputation as an international centre for architecture that makes a real difference to the discipline and what it offers humanity. We are particularly interested in applicants who are seeking leadership roles, whether in research, research training – particularly in the new design-based PhD, education – or in course direction.
The roles involve teaching in the undergraduate and postgraduate architecture courses, research student supervision both for traditional thesis based research and for the new design-based PhD program, and undertaking research or research-led practice which advances architecture and its contribution to humanity. This may be through theory, praxis or research-led practice.
Teaching responsibilities will include the coordination and delivery in whole or part of selected core and elective units of study in areas of your expertise, including design studios where appropriate. You will also be expected to build research collaborations within Architecture, the Faculty and University, and to apply for research funding to develop your research area.
You will be undertaking highly innovative work in the theory or practice of architecture which is receiving international acknowledgement for its innovation, insight, experimentation or advancement of architecture.
To be successful in the position, you will have as a minimum requirement:
- a professional qualification in architecture
- a PhD, a demonstrated research profile and developed research agenda or a portfolio of architectural and design work demonstrating a nationally recognised record of innovative research-led architectural design practice
- an established track record of published research through traditional research outputs and/or architectural works
- the capacity to coordinate and teach architectural design across the five years of the professional architecture degrees
- experience in teaching design studios with demonstrated teaching ability and track record of successful lecturing and tutoring experience in architecture at university level
- a demonstrated ability to supervise postgraduate and senior undergraduate students
- experience and interest in developing opportunities for interaction, cross-teaching and research development across Faculty programs
- an ability to pursue original research anticipating new directions in the field of architecture/architectural design.
A more substantial track record combined with evidence of academic leadership and management skills, together with experience in curriculum design, are required at Senior Lecturer Level C. An appointment at Associate Lecturer - Level A may also be considered for appropriate early-career candidates.
The positions are full-time continuing subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.
Previous applications will also be considered for these positions. There is no need to re-apply.
Remuneration package: $107-$131K p.a. including a base salary Level B-C $91K-$111K, leave loading and up to 17% superannuation.
