Inaugurated in the fall of 2001, Macaulay Honors College is dedicated to providing outstanding educational opportunities for academically gifted students from the five boroughs of New York City and beyond. The Macaulay Honors College program includes generous financial support for each student, including a full-tuition merit scholarship and a $7,500 Opportunities Fund grant. In addition, the Honors College offers unique interdisciplinary seminars focusing on New York City, training in instructional technology, dedicated mentors and advisors, prominent visiting professors, internships, study abroad experiences, and a Cultural Passport that provides entrée to the vast cultural resources of New York City. Macaulay operates in partnership with eight CUNY campuses: Baruch, Brooklyn, City, Hunter, John Jay, Lehman, Queens, and Staten Island; graduates are awarded a degree jointly conferred by Macaulay and their home campus. Currently, Macaulay Honors College has approximately 1,800 University Scholars enrolled on the eight campuses.
The Marketing and Communications team is a small but growing, in-house department that utilizes both internal and external resources to manage a large volume and variety of promotional projects. The Communications and College Relations Manager - Media Relations will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications. S/he will work with internal clients to generate positive press and media coverage and create press campaigns supporting programs and events of Macaulay Honors College to target audience groups. This role requires an expert storyteller and an excellent listener who thrives on building media relationships and making the perfect pitch. S/he will help develop and implement a creative, results-oriented public relations program to build awareness locally, regionally and nationally.
General Duties
- Establishes and maintains communication and ongoing working relationships with outside organizations and manages the design, implementation, and management of communications to support College visibility and recognition.
- Represents the College to a portfolio of external organizations
- Plans and implements communications campaigns, working with publications staff
- Applies an understanding of the concerns of external organizations to develop short- and long-range plans to advance the College's position and support community/public identified needs
- Plans and implements major activities such as conferences, collaborative partnerships, and educational programs to support identified needs and issues
- Identifies and develops new audiences and communities to further the mission of the College
- Develops and implements advertising and communications campaigns, working with publications and editorial personnel
- Maintain relationships with media representatives
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working in public relations, media relations, or journalism role; advanced degree may be substituted for up to 2 years of required experience
- Exceptional writing and editing skills in English
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with all college constituents including faculty, staff members, students, alumni, donors, and CUNY central and campus stakeholders
- Excellent organization skills; ability to work independently, conceptualize projects, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines; attention to detail
- Ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic, and entrepreneurial environment
- Full proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); HTML and blogging software experience
- Knowledge of best practices in social media such as Facebook and Twitter; knowledge of social media coordination tools such as Hootsuite
- Experience in higher education
