The Research Professor of Latin American Studies in the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) serves as an expert on security affairs in Latin America and the Caribbean, as they concern the U.S. Army and Department of Defense. The Research Professor anticipates, conceives, researches, writes, and publishes individual and joint studies providing timely and concise analyses of security issues concerning Latin America and the Caribbean that are important to the U.S. Army; develops policy and strategy alternatives, analyzes and assesses their implications and offers recommendations to Army leaders on security and military strategy; develops and executes, in consultation with SSI leadership, an annual study plan for Latin America and the Caribbean that anticipates and develops Army and broader national security issues, ensures the highest quality analyses, and produces products suitable for senior Army leaders; organizes and attends governmental and professional conferences to represent SSI and disseminate studies; responds to specific requests for research and analysis from the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, the Army Staff, the Joint Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and other elements of the U.S. military; researches and publishes SSI studies, journal articles, special reports and books or book chapters, which are distributed to military leaders, policymakers, government agencies, think tanks, and academic institutions world-wide; influences U.S. national security strategy regarding Latin America and the Caribbean through other types of publications, interviews by the news media, presentations to a wide range of audiences, and congressional testimony. Other major responsibilities include:
• Contributes to the educational mission of the U.S. Army War College.
• Participates in the College’s Annual Strategy Conference.
• Helps organize professional conferences, seminars, symposia and meetings.
• Respond to specific strategic research requests on topics that are normally based on the U.S. Army War College Key Strategic Issues List.
• Supports the SSI Academic Engagement Program.
• Directs students’ research with occasional presentations to USAWC classes.
• Reviews/referees manuscripts for academic journals.
• Regularly interacts with Department of the Army Headquarters, National Guard Bureau, and the Office of the Chief of the Army Reserves.
