ACAD, an integral part of Canada, Alberta and Calgary’s cultural community, offers four year bachelor’s programs and is developing our first graduate program. The Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD) welcomes applications from qualified candidates for the following position:
Director, Research + Graduate Studies
The Director of Research + Graduate Studies will provide leadership for the first Master of Fine Arts in Craft Media program to be established in Canada and fulfills the mandate provided to ACAD by the Government of Alberta to provide graduate level programming for art and design students. In addition to holding the credentials and qualifications listed below, it is expected that the successful candidate will be hired and appointed as Faculty, at the Associate Professor level. The successful candidate will then be seconded Academic Administration in the role of Director, Research + Graduate Studies for a term of one(1) to five (5) years. Applicants must be eligible for a permanent faculty appointment.
Reporting to the Vice President, Research + Academic Affairs, the Director must have extensive experience as an administrator leading, managing and maintaining a Masters level degree program concomitant with leading the development of a robust research institutional capacity; while maintaining and adding to Canada’s leading role in the emerging realm of research relating to art and design. The Director must bring a concrete understanding and experience with post-secondary educational policies and procedures; demonstrated ability to formulate and manage a strategic plan; the initiative to capitalize on all available resources through collaboration and outreach, and the vision to make the MFA in Craft Media a highly sought after program by applicants and partners both.
The Director of Research + Graduate Studies will lead an exploratory, interdisciplinary studio environment for craft-based art and design research and theoretical investigations; act as a mentor for graduate faculty and students; develop innovative project opportunities and entrepreneurial activity positioning ACAD as the catalyst institution in the field of art, design and cultural prosperity; identify areas for future growth and development for the program; utilize diverse and alternative avenues of income generation; link graduate research to international, national, regional art and design needs and networks; work closely with internal collaborators as well as external collaborators for developing a rigorous and robust research function and reputation for ACAD at all levels; ensures adherence to policies and procedures and supports external educational collaboration while supporting ACAD’s strategic academic goals.
Successful candidates will hold a terminal degree in art, design or related field with relevant experience in an academic environment distinguished by an excellent record of peer-reviewed publications, exhibitions, or comparable research accomplishments; a research agenda that has potential for external funding where appropriate and potential for scholarship or creative funding; a history of successful progressive responsibility in post-secondary administration; demonstrated teaching and administration in graduate education, demonstrated outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build consensus and work collaboratively with colleagues and students. Applicants should provide evidence of both professional and academic leadership as well as teaching experience that would warrant an appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.
