The Department of World Languages and Cultures (DWLC) in the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University in Washington, DC is seeking a visionary leader, outstanding scholar and experienced administrator to serve as Chair of the Department. DWLC currently has 33 full-time and 4 part time faculty members. It offers the B.A. degree in Spanish and French and provides minors and coursework in German, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Swahili, Wolof and Haitian Creole.
Candidates for the position must qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor, and should have a strong recognized record of exemplary scholarship and innovative interdisciplinary research and significant teaching in one or more of the world language and culture disciplines offered by the department.
The ideal candidate will be an individual with a national reputation of effective leadership capable of promoting a vision for academic and administrative programming and renewal, in close partnership and collaboration with faculty, staff and students, that enhances the stature and potential of DWLC and Howard University as a premiere unit and institution for the study of World Languages and Cultures, particularly, those of Africa and the African Diaspora across the world. The Department Chair is expected to lead the efforts currently underway to restore the graduate program (M.A. and Ph.D.) in French and Spanish, with concentrations in African and African Diaspora Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
The Department Chair is also expected to provide effective leadership to strengthen and expand study abroad initiatives, develop a state-of-the-art language laboratory, enhance the use of technology in teaching, learning and research, and redouble efforts to secure external funding.
