The Theological School of Drew University seeks an experienced and visionary dean to assume office prior to the 2014-2015 academic year. Review of applications will begin immediately.
The Theological School is one of the University’s three major academic units, including the College of Liberal Arts and the Caspersen School of Graduate Studies. The Theological School has a distinguished history in training clergy for the United Methodist Church and other Protestant denominations in the United States and globally. It is also a center of ecumenical scholarship and social action, educating students to make a dynamic impact on the world as pastors, professors, forward thinkers, and change agents. Among the defining features of Drew Theological School are its international orientation; diversity of faculty, staff, and students; and its innovative program offerings.
The dean will work with 23 full-time faculty and 461 students (a segment of the larger University’s 170 faculty and 2400 students) to support and promote intellectual rigor, cutting-edge research, experiential teaching and learning, prophetic ministry, and cross-cultural immersion in both the Theological School’s various professional degree programs and the Graduate Division of Religion’s PhD program.
The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated track record of success in administration and will be active in the life of the Church, preferably the United Methodist Church or another denomination of the Wesleyan tradition.Ideally, the candidate also will possess an advanced degree (PhD, ThD, or DMin). In addition, the dean will demonstrate the commitment and ability to: position the School effectively within 21st century theological education; promote the imaginative training of congregational ministers, community leaders, scholars, teachers, public intellectuals, and life-long learners; engage both internal and external constituents in funding and program support; encourage excellence in teaching, learning, and faculty research; empower faculty, staff and students to sustain a welcoming, responsive community; and appreciate the unique advantages of leading a theological school within a university setting. The successful candidate will also bring the interpersonal skills to lead collaboratively with integrity, creativity, humility, and humor.
