The Department of Culture and Society at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant professorship in Islam. The position as assistant professor is a three-year fixed-term appointment with the possibility of re-appointment to the position of associate professor in Islam. The appointment begins on 1 January 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position
We are seeking a dedicated candidate that will contribute to develop research and teaching in Islam at the section for the Study of Religion. The section for the Study of Religion is an ambitious and internationally oriented research environment encouraging an interdisciplinary approach to religion. The section for the Study of Religion is placed within the Department of Culture and Society, which holds a thriving research environment specifically related to Islam, including Anthropology and Arab and Islamic Studies. The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of this research environment. The applicant will be expected to participate actively in a relevant research programme at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University. We are looking for a candidate, who can demonstrate international commitment and ability to collaborate with key areas of national and international research within the fields of the Study of Religion in general and Islam more specifically.
Research
We are interested in a candidate with a strong research profile in the study of Islam. Documented insight into formative Islam is important, and insight into contemporary issues would be an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
While based within the Study of Religion programme, the successful candidate will also be expected to teach and develop activities at the broader departmental level, which will include cooperation with the Islamic Cultures and Societies Research Unit.
Teaching
The successful candidate will teach a range of introductory and advanced courses on Islam and carry out BA and MA supervision. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in teaching and educational development.
Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant is expected to exchange knowledge with various sectors of society outside of the university and to contribute actively to the general public debate in areas related to the position.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent qualifications in a field relevant to the described research area. Applicants must also document:
- Background in the history of religion or similar disciplines
- Thorough knowledge of classic Arabic
- Experience or interest in interdisciplinary research cooperation
- Ability to initiate and participate in collaborative projects with other research and teaching programmes at Aarhus University as well as in international contexts
- Interest in the application of innovative teaching methods, such as new forms of team teaching and collaborative student involvement
- Interest in working with PhD students (talent development)
- Interest in knowledge exchange.
Non-Danish speaking applicants are expected to learn Danish to participate in the daily administrative and academic business of the department within two years.

The Study of Religion programme at Aarhus University
The Study of Religion is concerned with religion in the most comprehensive sense. The studies cover all major world religions and other religions as well as phenomena essential to the history of religion, both past and present. This is reflected in research competences of the academic staff, which not only include a broad spectrum of empirical skills but also a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches from fields which include history, philology, history of literature, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and phenomenology of religion.
The Study of Religion at Aarhus University is one of the largest research milieus in the world in this field. It has particularly strong research competences in Norse religion, contemporary religion, cognition and experimental studies. The Department of Culture and Society
The focus of the teaching and research activities of the Department of Culture and Society is the interplay between culture and society in time and space:
- From the traditional disciplines of the humanities and theology to applied social research
- From antiquity to the issues facing contemporary societies
- From familiar Danish cultural forms to other – and very different – worlds
- From local questions to global challenges.
The department encompasses a range of strong research and degree programmes, which in dialogue with each other and with society work to develop innovative ways of addressing issues of topical or general interest. The goal of the department is to produce compelling research with international resonance and visibility as well as to offer high-quality undergraduate and post-graduate study programmes. Faculty of Arts
