The Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy & Religion within the College of Arts and Sciences at South Dakota State University seeks candidates with outstanding leadership skills and innovative approaches to problem-solving that will facilitate the development of a dynamic interdisciplinary department. Rank and disciplinary specialization are open, and tenure is negotiable. The appointment will begin no later than August 22, 2014.
The department head will work collaboratively with faculty to provide vision and leadership for the unit; enhance the overall quality of teaching, research and service efforts; and work effectively with university administrators, the academic dean and department heads. The department head will supervise faculty and staff; manage budgets; and plan, develop and implement programs and services that meet the continually evolving needs of the students. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include planning, organizing, and managing all departmental resources, including fiscal resources. The department head will be expected to promote and represent the departmental programs through an active agenda of outreach. In addition to administrative responsibilities, the Head will have limited but regular teaching duties; will be expected to maintain an appropriately active program of research; and will serve the department, college, university, discipline and community. A working knowledge of current higher education technology systems and data bases is expected.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requirements include a Ph.D. in one or more of the areas of History, Political Science, Philosophy or Religion.
Evidence of progressively effective leadership, efficient management, and service.
Evidence of successful collaboration with interdisciplinary programs.
Evidence of a pattern of sustained excellence in teaching.
A record of successful scholarship.
Documented evidence of excellence in interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Collaborative leadership experience.
Interdisciplinary training and/or professional experiences.
Ability to mentor and guide the professional development of colleagues.
Experience working with internal and external constituents.
Evidence of successful grant writing activity.
SALARY:
Commensurate with qualifications.
UNIVERSITY/COMMUNITY:
SDSU is a land grant institution and the state's largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students. The History, Political Science, Philosophy and Religion department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in History and Political Science. In addition, minors are available in History, Political Science, Philosophy or Religion. The department offers service courses for the entire university community as well as providing a comprehensive program of study for majors and minors.
SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of approximately 22,100 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city of close to 150,000.
