Position (Open Rank) in East Asian Visual Culture, Sophia University
The Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University, invites applications for an open-rank position in the area of East Asian visual culture. The position is part of the Comparative Culture major within the Faculty. The appointment will be effective as early as April 1, 2014, or October 1, 2014. The candidate’s research should involve an interdisciplinary analysis of visual form; specialization can range from art history to cultural and media studies, and should address issues that are relevant for the entire East Asian region, such as nationalism, postcolonialism, or globalization. Expertise may be held in any period, but candidates who work on modern Asia and can also teach a historical course on Chinese or Korean visual culture are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates are expected to teach four courses one year, and five courses the next year, on a two-year rotation. These courses include one introductory-level course in the Core Program per year as well as a course at the graduate level.
Sophia University, located in central Tokyo, was founded in 1913 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of Japan’s leading private universities. The Faculty of Liberal Arts offers a comprehensive program in humanities, international business and economics, and social studies. We also staff the Graduate Program in Global Studies, which offers degrees in Global Studies, Japanese Studies, and International Business and Developmental Studies.
Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph. D. by the time of appointment and should have excellent teaching and lecturing skills. The language of instruction is English. Japanese language competency is desirable but not required. Applications should include a cover letter (outlining academic record, research interests, teaching experience, and reasons for the applicant’s interest in seeking employment in Japan), a curriculum vitae, the names and addresses of three referees, two publication samples, a brief description of courses the applicant has taught or would be prepared to develop, and a sample syllabus. All applications should be postmarked no later than September 30, 2013, and addressed to:
