The Department of Anthropology at UNC-Chapel Hill is seeking to hire a 1-year replacement Instructor in cultural medical anthropology. We seek a dynamic teacher whose research focuses on anthropological analyses of biomedicine, including topics such as: new biomedical technologies and ontologies of the body; disability and care-giving; infectious disease in political-economic and cultural contexts; epidemics and the politics of biosecurity; medical research and clinical trials; transplant; end-of-life care; and drug use/rehabilitation technologies. Scholars working on questions related to the intersections of biomedicines and other medical systems, including epistemologies of medical pluralism, the politics of bio-prospecting, and the circulation of pharmaceuticals, are also of interest.
Fall semester courses to be taught are: 1)Body and Subject, an upper level course examining the body and embodiment in anthropological perspective; and 2)Living Medicine, an introductory-level course examining the various dimensions of biomedicine as work, knowledge, industry, and identity. Spring semester courses are 1)Medicine and Anthropology, an upper level undergraduate course examining anthropology’s approach to the study of biomedicine; and 2) Anthropological Approaches to Disability, an upper level undergraduate course examining anthropology’s approach to the cultural analysis of disability. Adjustments to spring semester courses are possible.
We are also looking for a colleague who will be actively engaged in our Moral Economies of Medicine Working Group.
