The University of Baltimore seeks an experienced and energetic faculty leader who values teaching, research, and service to direct its robust University-wide writing program. We need a scholar and teacher with a distinguished record who has the vision and administrative skills to further the growth of an independent, teaching-centered undergraduate writing program dedicated to writing across the disciplines. The writing program is an intercollegiate program housed in the Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences that offers undergraduate courses in developmental, lower, and upper-level writing. The director reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and works collaboratively within the UB community to assure that students have high quality writing experiences.
Responsibilities:
This is a 12-month appointment. The director oversees the Writing Program, providing leadership in developing and sustaining the mission of writing studies across UB. Writing courses are taught mostly by writing program adjuncts and some graduate teaching assistants (currently recruited primarily from our MFA in creative writing). The director supervises faculty recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation; organizes, plans, and staffs the curriculum; assesses all levels of writing courses; supervises placement testing, and represents the program across campus to a variety of stakeholders. The director will teach at least one writing course per semester. We expect the director to guide development of all writing-intensive courses.
Duties:
- Develop a campus-wide writing culture with support from, among others, the General Education Council, the Honors Program, and the Bank of America Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Technology;
- Partner with the Achievement and Learning Center on tutorial needs and support services;
- Expand the teaching assistant program;
- Structure professional development activities for writing program faculty.
Qualifications include: doctorate in Rhetoric and Composition or related field, established research profile, experience in and commitment to teaching undergraduate writing, experience in writing program administration and/or progressive university administration, experience in program-level assessment of student learning outcomes.
