Based London Euston
The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) in Central London has the object of promoting the scholarship and learning of Muslim cultures and societies, historical as well as contemporary, and a better understanding of their relationship with other societies and faiths.
The IIS seeks an experienced scholar, ideally with a library background to assume responsibility for the care and expansion of its extensive collections of books, manuscripts, documents, coins and artefacts representative of the Ismaili tradition, creating and maintaining suitable developmental and presentational strategies as needed.
The IIS Ismaili Collections are the largest and most significant such collection in the world with materials in a wide range of languages and formats. Consequently, the successful candidate will have a good working knowledge of at least one Near Eastern language, preferably Arabic and/or Persian; a working knowledge of other relevant languages (Urdu, Gujarati) will be an advantage. Preferably, candidates should be familiar with Anglo-American cataloguing rules and practices and be conversant with current technologies in information science. Experience in the preservation and conservation of rare materials in both microfilm and digital formats will be a distinct advantage.
Candidates must have a higher degree in Islamic Studies or a related field and have scholarly or management experience associated with management of collections, their care and strategic development as learning and teaching resource. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate extensive managerial experience, especially across teams and different units in support of a common purpose. Willingness to, and previous experience of, supervising and training team members is also essential.
The Collections will be moving to a new home within the next 4 years and this role offers the successful candidate the exciting opportunity to be part of the development of a purpose-designed entirely new collection management and display environment utilising 21st century technologies to the maximum.
