The Department of Culture and Society invites invitations for the position of assistant professor of visual anthropology.
The assistant professorship is a three-year, fixed-term, full-time position, beginning on 1 January 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Job description
We are looking for a candidate with a sound understanding of anthropology's core expertise and a strong research profile within visual anthropology, in particular audio-visual methods in data collection, analysis and presentation. The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and teaching anthropology's new international Master's programme in visual anthropology. Please see this website.
The teaching will take place in English. In addition, the successful applicant must be able to teach the other general courses in anthropology at both Bachelor’s and Master's level.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to Aarhus University's activities in the areas of research, teaching, talent development and knowledge exchange. The successful applicant is also expected to make an active contribution to the academic environment of this subject area.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD in anthropology or similar qualifications. Applicants must also have teaching experience corresponding at least to the experience gained during a PhD degree programme.
In addition, applicants are expected
- To have relevant and internationally oriented research experience
- To have experience of or interest in knowledge exchange
- To show initiative in entering into interdisciplinary research and teaching partnerships both at Aarhus University and internationally
- To be interested in supervision and talent development
- To have English language skills at an academic level
The position involves both research and teaching at the department, so applicants must be willing and able to be physically present on a daily basis. Applicants who are not fluent in Danish will be expected to learn enough Danish to participate in the daily business of the department within about two years.

The academic environment
The Aarhus researchers are committed to the anthropological tradition that combines empirical research based on ethnographic fieldwork (both in Denmark and the rest of the world) with theoretically based historical and comparative studies. The basic research encompasses all dimensions of the subject: broad cross-disciplinary work on theories about what it means to be human, detailed methodological reflections on the basic conditions and current challenges of fieldwork, thorough engagement with ethnographic-regional and thematic specialities, and continuing experiments with anthropological forms of representation (in writing, museum displays, audio-visually and through the internet).
The current research includes themes such as: Democracy, bureaucracy, welfare, conflict and politics, human security, cognition, emotions and time, religion, morality and global modernity, design and innovation. The researchers have regional expertise in Africa, the Arctic region, Asia, Europe (particularly the North Atlantic region and Denmark), the Middle East, Latin America and the Pacific region. The Department of Culture and Society
