Associate Research Fellows/ PhD studentships (Fall of State Socialism)
Two three-year PhD studentships, and three five-year associate research fellowships, are offered at the University of Exeter (UK) on a major Leverhulme Trust-funded project that will consider how the collapse of state socialism in Europe, and transition that followed, has come to be understood both in the region which experienced these events, and in the wider world. Applications are welcome not only from those who wish to work on Eastern Europe or the former Soviet Union, but also those interested in the representations and impact of this historical shift across the world.

Three five-year postdoctoral fellowships are offered from 1 January 2014. Applicants from all humanities and social science fields, dealing with a wide range of themes and sources – from oral sources to political discourse to film to literature to legal texts, and beyond - are welcomed. Postdoctoral fellows will be required to carry out their own research leading to a monograph of international standing, or equivalent; lead the development of a broader thematic area connected to their own research through hosting workshops/ a conference and producing appropriate publications (such as a thematic journal issue or edited volume); and work on collaborative outputs – such as the project’s website, collective writing, policy engagement, and a museum exhibition - where appropriate.
Applicants should therefore outline a major research project with a level of ambition commensurate with a funded five-year project. Details of what is required can be found at:
The starting salary will be £25,504 - £26,476, Grade E, depending on skills and experience.

Leverhulme Doctoral Studentship (Fall of State Socialism) Ref: 1222
We are inviting applications for these two Leverhulme Trust funded PhD studentships to start in January 2014 or soon after. Open to UK/EU applicants only, the awards will cover tuition fees and an annual stipend of £13,590 for three years. The studentships are awarded on the basis of merit. The students will be supervised by Professor James Mark and registered and based in the Department of History, University of Exeter (Streatham Campus).
