San Francisco State University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track lecturer position in Turkish language and culture, starting in fall 2013. Subject to grant approval, SF State plans to build the foundations for Turkish Studies over the next three years. Because it is grant-funded, the lectureship position is subject to yearly review. The selected candidate will teach introductory Turkish language courses, as well as courses on Turkish culture, history, literature, the arts and humanities more broadly. Prior experience and excellence in teaching both Turkish language and culture classes, as well as enthusiasm to build an academic program in Turkish Studies preferred.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Applicants must possess at least an M.A. or preferably a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition (SLA), or a related field with a significant SLA focus, such as Near Eastern Languages, Turkish Language and Literature, Middle Eastern Studies, Comparative Literature, etc.
• Applicants should have native or native-like proficiency in both Turkish and English. They must have demonstrated experience and excellence in teaching Turkish effectively at the college or university level in the U.S. and have appropriate work authorization for employment in the United States.
• The successful candidate will assist in the development of a content-based, culturally-centered curriculum for the teaching of Turkish language and culture.
• The successful candidate will be expected to work within the curriculum of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Program, and work on integrating the courses with the newly established Study Abroad Program at Koç University, Istanbul.
• In light of SFSU’s core mission to link academic learning to surrounding communities, the successful candidate will be working on establishing ties with local Turkish communities.
