STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Assistant Director / Lecturer
Residential/Academic Initiative in History of Science
Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
Stanford University’s Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) seeks an Assistant Director/Lecturer for a pilot program that will integrate a year-long history of science curriculum with residentially based learning opportunities for 45 freshmen in residence beginning in autumn 2013. SIMILE (Science in the Making: Integrated Learning Environment) will foster conversation about the nature, origins, and evolution of science, medicine, and technology from antiquity to the present day in a living/learning community that supports new students’ transition to college-level learning. The Assistant Director will serve as an instructor in the program as well as the lead administrator and academic coordinator among members of the teaching team.
Successful candidates will demonstrate evidence of distinction in relevant scholarship and research and will hold a Ph.D. in History, with an emphasis on history and/or philosophy of science. Special consideration will be given to scholars whose expertise also combines one or more fields in the sciences, and thus would bring an interdisciplinary focus to the team
The position requires excellence in college-level teaching; experience working with first-year students is a strong plus. Candidates should also have at least three years of experience in program planning and implementation as well as two years of supervisory and administrative experience, preferably in an academic liberal education setting.
Start –up activities are already underway to prepare for a September opening of this innovative freshman program. The assistant director will be called upon between now and the beginning of the school year to represent the academic program in designing facilities, setting up processes for student selection, identifying potential enhancement activities and other important duties. Therefore, preference will go to candidates who are ready to begin employment as soon as possible. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
