Duties:
The Center for Teaching and Learning seeks an associate director to take an active role in all aspects of the center, with a particular emphasis on supporting the University of Pennsylvania's new open online teaching initiative. Working as a part of a team to support teaching, this associate director will contribute broadly to the center's programming, including, but not limited to: organizing, leading and participating in workshops on teaching; consulting with instructors and/or graduate students and observing classes; and communicating with groups throughout Penn to develop and coordinate teaching programs. The ideal candidate may also be eligible to teach part-time at Penn. As the center's specialist on open online teaching, this associate director will, with other staff members, build CTL's expertise in teaching in this format, provide workshops and consultations for instructors engaged in that teaching, and develop new programs to enhance open online teaching.
The Center for Teaching and Learning works with faculty, teaching assistants and other instructors across the university of foster teaching excellence at Penn. As Penn is launching a series of MOOCs, CTL has been enlisted to support the teaching quality of those courses. This position incorporates both those purposes, contributing to and building on the Center's traditional work in order to develop a leading program to support distinction in open online teaching.
Qualifications:
Master's degree required, Ph.D. strongly preferred, plus a minimum of 2-3 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience; Teaching experience at the college level essential; Experience in working in a university environment; Experience in and ideas about teacher development; Ability to develop and administer teaching improvement programs; Ability to work with a variety of disciplines and teaching styles; Sensitivity to the personal issues related to the improvement of teaching; Excellent oral and written communications skills; Interest in the use of technology in teaching; Experience and/or interest in open online teaching.
