Loyola University Maryland invites applicants for the position of Director of Global Studies, beginning August, 2013. Global Studies is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major based in the departments of Economics, History, Political Science and Sociology. The major was established in 2006-07, has experienced rapid growth, and is poised for further expansion in the future. The Director of Global Studies is a full time faculty position to be held by an experienced teacher/scholar with a record of teaching and research focused on global or international issues.
The Director of Global Studies will have a departmental home in one of the four core Global Studies departments: Economics, History, Political Science or Sociology. The successful candidate should have a record of teaching and research consistent with the rank of associate or full professor in the appropriate department. Administrative experience is required, with a preference for prior experience with interdisciplinary programs. The Director will be appointed to a three year renewable term.
The Director of Global Studies will be responsible for managing the day to day operations and planning related to the successful execution of the major. Areas of responsibility will include: Coordination of course offerings across Global Studies departments; Course approvals for study abroad; Coordination of advising for Global Studies majors; Chairing the Global Studies Steering Committee; Teaching the Global Studies Senior Seminar; Leading curriculum monitoring and revision; Program budgeting; Program building activities for students and faculty; Acting as the liaison between the Global Studies program and other academic and administrative units on campus; Grant proposal writing to support continued expansion of the program.
The Director of Global Studies will receive one course reduction per semester relative to the Loyola norm for tenured faculty of three courses per semester. The Director will be expected to teach the Global Studies Senior Seminar once each year. Other courses will typically be introductory or upper level courses in the Director's area of expertise that contribute to the home department and the Global Studies program. The Director will be expected to satisfy research expectations consistent with those outlined for associate or full professors in the home department.
