JOB SUMMARY
This is a position of Curator (Asia Collections) within the Curatorial Department, a unit within the MOA Centre for Cultural Research at the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). This position is currently funded for four years, with possibility for extension. The position is responsible for research – including documentation, publication and curation – and development of exhibition strategies for the Asian section of the Museum. The curator will be responsible for providing access to the Asian collections and to develop and maintain relationships with the diverse Asian communities, UBC and other interested stakeholders to ensure appropriate, respectful and relevant research and display of the collections. The successful candidate will be called to advise the Director on plans to establish a future Asian wing at the Museum and will be expected to participate on committees and administration as required. In addition, the Curator, Asia, will be expected to actively build new institutional relationships between MOA, Asian Studies, and other academic departments at UBC.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
This position is within the Curatorial Department and reports to the Department Head. The post holder may be seconded for project-related work as required. A wide-latitude of decision making is required.
- WORK PERFORMED
- Works to build relationships to enhance teaching, research and programmes between MOA and UBC Faculty
- Contributes to the intellectual life of the MOA Centre for Cultural Research through lectures, seminars, publications, etc.
- Researches, documents and advises on further acquisitions of the Museum’s Asian collections
- Develops exhibition strategies for the Asian collections in accordance with agreed curatorial processes
- Provides access to the Asian collections in response to relevant requests from researchers, students, communities and others
- Works collaboratively with diverse Asian communities, UBC and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate, respectful and relevant research and display of the collections
- Researches and publishes on Asian arts and cultures
- Advises the Director on plans to establish a future Asian wing at the Museum as required
- Participates on relevant committees and administration as required
- Develops and prepares applications to granting agencies for specific projects
- Represents the Museum at professional meetings and conferences
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR/IMPACT OF DECISIONS
Error in judgment might result in difficult working relationships with artists and communities, volunteers and other staff. It could also result in loss of trust and credibility to partners in Asian communities.
SUPERVISION REQUIRED
The position reports to the Head of the Curatorial Department following institutional priorities. The Curatorial Department is part of the MOA Centre for Cultural Research, which is overseen by the Associate Director, Research.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
The position may supervise volunteers and students, visiting interns from Asian and other cultural communities, contract artists and curators, or others contracted to perform services.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Curators work in an open, creative, office environment in their own work pods
PERSONNEL SPECIFICATIONS
Education
- Must hold an MA (PhD preferred) in Anthropology, Art History, History, or Asian Studies and have research and/or exhibition experience.
Experience
- Must have experience working with Asian collections
- Demonstrated track record in research, publications, exhibitions or appropriate curatorial outputs
- Experience working with a variety of Asian communities and individuals and knowledge of appropriate protocols for Museums and Universities
- Must be committed to developing the digital assets of the Museum and working towards ensuring full and updated documentation of collections for which they are responsible
Skills
- Ability to speak and write at least one Asian language
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability in working with artists, cultural communities and organizations, and other program partners
- Ability to teach and lecture in area of expertise to relevant academic and public audiences
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of Asian communities and individuals within university and museum protocols
- Ability to travel and work flexible hours when required
