The History Department in the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona(Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2013. The Department seeks a specialist in Modern Continental European History, 19th and 20th centuries, with a preference for social, intellectual (including history of science and technology), or political history, and an ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: colonialism and/or postcolonialism in Africa, gender and sexuality.
The Position:Primary duties include: (1) teaching courses on modern European history, and lower division surveys of world history; (2) advising undergraduate students; (3) participating in activities related to the missions of the department, the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the university at large; (4) engaging in scholarly activities, including but not limited to research and publication, fellowship, and grant programs; (5) participating in assigned and related duties, including committee work, community service related to one’s academic expertise, and assignments related to university governance. Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Modern European History (excluding Britain and Russia) from an accredited university by September 1, 2013
- Evidence of effective teaching in a college or university setting
- Evidence of ability to work with and mentor a diverse student population

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- Research experience or graduate training focused on the social/political and/or intellectual history of modern Europe, with emphasis on science, colonialism and/or postcolonialism in Africa, and/or gender and sexuality.
- Ability to teach in one or more other topical areas of the department’s existing curriculum
- Interest or experience in programs that expand education beyond a campus’ boundaries (e.g., international education or community-based learning experiences).
- Familiarity with digital history and/or historical GIS

- a cover letter that describes the candidate’s teaching and research experience and interests and that addresses the duties and qualifications articulated in the position description; this must include a statement of the candidate's teaching philosophy within a multicultural environment with examples of past experiences;
- a curriculum vitae comprised of at least those elements specified on the application form and including the names, titles, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate’s potential for success in this position;

- a transcript showing highest degree earned (an official transcript will be required of finalists); and
- three recent letters of reference (dated within the past two years).
