Applications are invited for a postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of History at King’s College London, to participate in the ERC-funded project ‘China and the Historical Sociology of Empire’. You willhave a background in the Chinese humanities and will be working under the supervision of Dr Hilde De Weerdt (Principal Investigator), with a project team consisting of two other postdoctoral research associates, and in collaboration with the Digital Humanities Department at King’s College and a network of international collaborators. The project aims to contribute towards a better understanding of the divergent courses of the political histories of Chinese and European polities in the second millennium through the historical analysis of political communication (in the broad sense of the circulation of information about political events and institutions).
The position is available from 1 January 2013 for a duration of three years. The History department has a strong contingent of medievalists and a great deal of expertise in working with digital resources projects in collaboration with the Department for Digital Humanities (DDH).
You will conduct original research on select diaries and notebooks published between the ninth through sixteenth centuries. You will examine the dynamics of elite networks through an examination of the textual history of a relatively large sample of notebooks and an analysis of their contents. You will also assist in the content development of the project website (bibliographies, reviews); assist in the organization of a workshops and a conferences and in the publication of project research (a minimum of two publications expected). In order to facilitate the evaluation and reuse of primary sources and data, the associate along with the other project members will to the extent possible contribute all primary sources in a structured format. The online presentation of the data and query tools will be undertaken by a research associate in the Digital Humanities and colleagues from the King’s College Digital Humanities Department. You will be employed full time for 36 months. A Ph.D. in Chinese history and a strong interest in comparative history and digital humanities are required. Further requirements include reading competence in classical Chinese and prior research in imperial Chinese history. Experience in digital text analysis is desirable but not necessary as training will be provided.
You are expected to work at the KCL Strand campus.
The salary for this appointment is Grade 6, £31,020 per annum, plus £2,323 London Allowance per annum.
