Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASoS) has a staff of about 250, and about 1900 students. All programmes are offered in English. Students come from all over the world. FASoS offers two 3-year Bachelor programmes: Arts and Culture, and European Studies, seven different 1-year Master courses and two 2-year research Master programmes. Its Graduate School takes in around 10 PhD students each year. Research is organized around three programmes: ‘Politics and Culture in Europe’; ‘Science, Technology and Society Studies’; and ‘Arts, Media and Culture’. There is also a ‘Globalization and Development Initiative’, which clusters various long-term interdisciplinary collaborative research programmes on themes of Globalization and Development. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences is housed in several recently renovated 18th-century buildings in the historic city centre of Maastricht.
Job description
The candidate will contribute to the teaching of courses and supervision of internships, projects and theses related to cultural education, primarily in the Master Arts and Heritage: Policy, Management and Education and in the Bachelor Arts and Culture. Nearly 80 students, most of them international, are currently registered on this Master programme and over 450 for the Bachelor programme. Research is carried out within the context of the Research Institute Arts and Social Sciences and, in particular, relating to the interdisciplinary research programme ‘Arts, Media and Culture’. The candidate is expected to develop international research projects and to attract external funding. The teaching and management duties will take about 60% of time, with research making up the other 40%.
Requirements
The candidate will have a PhD degree in one of the relevant Humanities and/or Social Science disciplines (museum studies, museum education, art history, sociology of art, etc.). (S)he will be fluent in English and be open to interdisciplinary work.
A substantial number of international academic publications will be imperative. A relevant international network should provide a solid base for acquiring research funding. (S)he will have experience with leading externally funded research projects.
The candidate must be able to demonstrate that (s)he is capable of teaching effectively in a way that stimulates student learning and maximizes student participation in group discussions. As such, (s)he will be an inspiring and stimulating supervisor. Experience with teaching international classrooms is preferable.All members of staff are expected to place an emphasis on high quality teaching, as reflected in our system of small-scale problem based learning (PBL).

The successful candidate will be appointed as an associate professor. In the first year of employment, (s)he will have ample opportunity to demonstrate their talents, enterprising approach and constructive attitude. Thereafter, on the basis of good performance, the appointment may be extended by another four years. Subsequently, there may be the possibility to apply for tenure (appointment for an indefinite period of time) depending on the Faculty’s financial situation.
Remuneration will be according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience, between a minimum of € 4.428,-- and a maximum of € 5.390,-- gross per month,based on Scale 13 (for a full-time appointment). The gross annual salary, according to standard salary levels, depending on education and relevant work experience, is between a minimum of € 61.797,-- and a maximum of € 75.223,-- (for a full-time appointment). Persons who do not already live in Maastricht (or its immediate area) will be eligible for a relocation allowance.
