Duties & Responsibilities:
The Memorial Church of Harvard University serves an important role in the Universitys religiously pluralistic culture, and provides, as well, a unique and important voice in religious life beyond campus. Harvard has a rich history of religious engagement, and is today a diverse community of faith and spirituality.As the leader of the Memorial Church, the Pusey Minister will be expected to participate in a multi-faith dialogue on campus and will engage Harvards various student communities.The Pusey Minister will also provide pastoral services to individuals and the broader community and will be expected to play a role in University occasions, such as Convocation and Commencement.The Pusey Minister will be expected to excel in the various dimensions of church leadership, serving as a preacher, pastor, teacher, administrator, and fundraiser.
The Pusey Minister will assume the full range of duties required to lead and manage the Church, including all matters relating to the Churchs ministry and worship, the design of liturgies, the establishment of preaching schedules, and the management of the staffing, administration and operations of the Church.The Memorial Church is an active place of worship and holds morning prayer services six days a week, including Saturday, and also has a Sunday service.Its audiences include undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the wider community.The Memorial Church has an exceptionally strong musical program that works closely with the Churchs ministers.
The Memorial Church has a local, national, and global reach.The Pusey Minister will serve as an ambassador from Harvard to various secular and faith communities outside the University.
The Pusey Minister will be expected to:
1.Write and deliver sermons that engage the local and the broader Harvard community and other interested audiences in a scholarly and compelling approach to spiritual and religious issues.
2.Appreciate a broad diversity of religious faiths and integrate their practices into a rich campus ministry.
3.Maintain and direct an ecumenical, intellectual, and interfaith community for students.
4.Provide pastoral services to students, congregants, and members of the Harvard community.
5.Design and implement Sunday services, preaching regularly and arranging for visiting preachers of note, oversee the organization of the daily services of Morning Prayer; oversee the Noble and Tillich lectures; assist in identifying appropriate speakers; arrange for special services (baptisms, weddings and memorial services); participate in Convocation and Commencement exercises.
6.Oversee and manage the administration and operations of the Church including: developing and managing annual and capital budgets; managing a staff of sixteen; establishing a system of regular meetings; maintaining clear lines of communications; setting the agenda for and presiding at weekly staff meetings; serving as the primary liaison, on administrative matters, with the central administration; mediating and resolving staff disputes.
7.Oversee an array of ministerial responsibilities, including: interfacing and working with the Harvard Chaplains; working with and supervising the ministries of the Associate Minister/Chaplain to the University, the Epps Fellow, the MacDonald Chaplain, the Organist/Choirmaster and any seminarians serving at the Church; arranging, when necessary, for pastoral care for students, faculty, and members of the congregation.
8.Oversee and manage all fundraising activities for the annual appeal and any capital needs.
9.Work as a liaison with central administrative departments and others to complete any capital projects that need to be planned and/or executed.
Basic Qualifications:
Ordained minister, with experience in administering the affairs of a large congregation or religious institution with a multifaceted mission.Candidates with appropriate academic credentials may also be eligible to occupy the Plummer Professorship of Christian Morals.
Additional Qualifications:
Previous campus ministry or other university experience.
Proven track record of successful management of complex church operations, including supervision of a ministerial and programmatic staff, and successful management of administrative teams.
