The Ohio State University, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (NELC), invites applications for the position of a tenure-eligible assistant professor in Arabic, specializing in the contemporary practice of Islamic law. Applicants must show high promise of maintaining an active program of research, publication, and teaching concerning how modern and classical texts related to Islamic law are interpreted, applied, and lived out within their social, political, economic, and cultural contexts. We welcome applicants trained in legal anthropology, critical legal theory, Islamic studies, religious studies, cultural studies, or other disciplines providing theoretical frameworks for this scholarship. The successful applicant must know classical Arabic/modern standard Arabic and will be expected to teach upper level classes in the language as part of his/her duties. It is highly desirable for the applicant's research to include some form of fieldwork at the research sites where Islamic law is practiced. Field sites can be anywhere in the contemporary world, involving any vernacular languages. Teaching duties will also include courses on Islamic law and society, more general courses on the Muslim-majority parts of the world today, and related subjects of the candidate's particular expertise in accordance with the department's undergraduate and graduate curricula. Depending on the successful applicant's scholarly focus, opportunities are also possible for teaching cross-listed courses and collaborating with colleagues in the Moritz College of Law and in the Department of Comparative Studies (cultural studies, religious studies) in the Division of Arts and Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences. PhD to be in hand by September, 2012, when the position begins.
