The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin (MPIWG) welcomes applications
for
one Predoctoral Scholarship
Applicants are expected to propose a project related to the research project of the Max
Planck Research Group on Art and Knowledge in Pre-Modern Europe (Director: Sven
Dupré). Projects on optical knowledge in the context of the visual and decorative arts
in the fifteenth to seventeenth century are especially encouraged, but all other proposals
relevant to Art and Knowledge in Pre-Modern Europe will be considered. For more

The proposed research project should result in a doctoral dissertation supervised by
Sven Dupré, appointed as professor of history of knowledge at the Free University of
Berlin from 1 October 2011. The selected candidate will need to fulfill all necessary
conditions for the doctoral promotion at the FU.
Applicants must hold an M.A. or equivalent in history, history of science or (technical)
art history with an above-average grade. The scholarship is granted for one year with
the possibility of an extension for two additional years pending positive evaluation. It is
endowed as a pre-doctoral fellowship with a stipend of € 1365 monthly.
The provided starting date is 1 October 2011; postponement is negotiable.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a dissertation proposal (maximum 1500
words), in which its relevance to the research project of the Research Group on Art and
Knowledge in Pre-Modern Europe is made clear, academic certificates, and the name
of one referee who has agreed to be contacted to write a letter of recommendation if
