Position: | Assistant Professor |
The Department of History at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in African history beginning Fall 2011. The department welcomes scholars in all periods and geographical areas as well as those representing all specialized areas and interpretive approaches. Because of the Colleges’ strengths in environmental, global, and gender studies, candidates with teaching and research interests in these areas are preferred. Teaching will include undergraduate survey courses in African history and upper-level courses of the instructor’s choice. Courses that are interdisciplinary and that place Africa in a global perspective are particularly appealing to our students, who participate in many study abroad and community service programs. Ph.D. preferred, AbD considered.
Founded as Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women, Hobart and William Smith Colleges today are a highly selective residential liberal arts institution with a single administration, faculty and curriculum but separate dean’s offices, student governments, athletic programs and traditions. The Colleges are located in a small diverse city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. With an enrollment of approximately 2,000, the Colleges offer 62 different majors and minors from which students choose two areas of concentration, one of which must be an interdisciplinary program. Hobart and William Smith Colleges are committed to attracting and supporting a faculty of women and men that fully represent the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the nation and actively seek applications from under-represented groups. The Colleges do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religious, sex marital status, national origin, age, disability veteran’s status, or sexual orientation or any other protected status.
