State Library of New South Wales, Original Materials
Professional Researcher (consultancy) required to scope the breadth of the Library’s WW1 collection which comprises personal diaries, correspondence, pictorial materials, maps, realia and ephemera.
Institution Type: | Nonprofit |
Location: | Australia |
Position: | Temporary |
The State Library of NSW is seeking a preliminary Expression of Interest from published historians.
We are offering a short-term consultancy (possibly up to four months in total, spread over a number of sessions, as negotiated).
As part of the centenary commemorations of World War One in 2014, the State Library of NSW plans to present its unique collections of original material to Australian and international audiences both online and through public programs such as exhibitions and tours. The uniqueness of our material lies in the personal and private accounts - largely in the form of diaries and journals - by Australians from all walks of life who enlisted in the Services (for example: soldiers, sailors, cooks, entertainers, nurses and stretcher bearers). Much of this collection was acquired immediately after the War by Principal Librarian William Ifould as part of the European War Collecting Project. The State Library’s collection is one of the most significant in Australia.
It is envisaged that the audience for this project will be broad and multi-dimensional and will include family historians, the education sector (this is a strong subject area within the new national schools’ curriculum) and the community generally.
We are seeking a suitably qualified person to work with Library Curators to identify the most significant material held in this collection and prioritise its relevance for projects the Library is developing. In order to deliver this ambitious project we need to scope the breadth of the Library’s WW1 collection which comprises personal diaries, correspondence (including internment letters), pictorial materials, maps, trench and troopship journals, realia and ephemera. The aim of the consultancy is to provide a priority framework from which the Library’s project team can develop multiple products: a major online presence, a series of regional seminars, community activities, an on-site exhibition, and accompanying publications.
The selected candidate will have an in depth knowledge of Australia’s involvement in the War, the theatres of war and campaigns where Australians served which are revealed in our collection material. The selected candidate will also have an extensive knowledge of complementary material held in other Australian collecting institutions including the Australian War Memorial, the National Archives and the National Library of Australia.
