EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
NEWCOMB COLLEGE INSTITUTE
Tulane University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Executive Director of the H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute. The Newcomb College Institute is a dynamic interdisciplinary academic institute designed to enhance womens education at Tulane University. Established in July 2006 to continue the legacy of Newcomb College, the Institute comprises the Newcomb College Center for Research on Women, the Nadine Vorhoff Library, the Newcomb Alumnae Office, the Newcomb Student Programs Office, and robust programming and scholarship programs that have supported undergraduate women and the Newcomb community by hosting events and speakers, funding student and faculty research projects, providing student grants, participating in community rebuilding, and hosting symposia and international summits.
Candidates for Executive Director must have the following:
an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree
a record of exemplary scholarly research or creative productivity appropriate to a full professor at a major research university
a record of engagement with womens issues, preferably from an inter- or multi-disciplinary perspective
demonstrated commitment to women's education, in particular undergraduate education
demonstrated administrative leadership at the post-secondary level
demonstrated interest in the history and trajectory of the former H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College and the current H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College Institute
The Executive Director of the Newcomb College Institute will be expected to:
articulate and execute a vision to increase the national/international reputation of the Newcomb College Institute
carry forward the legacy and spirit of Newcomb College and the vibrant Newcomb community
enhance existing initiatives and create new ones to bolster Newcomb College alumnae and undergraduate student interaction
embrace and expand the Newcomb College Institutes mission to draw upon women students and all faculties from across the university in a dynamic, interdisciplinary program designed to enhance womens education
manage the operating budget of the Newcomb College Institute within the parameters of its mission, objectives, and programming
provide leadership for and manage the units of the Newcomb College Institute including but not limited to: the Newcomb Student Programs Office, the Newcomb Fellows Program, the Newcomb College Center for Research on Women (NCCROW), the Newcomb Scholars program, the Newcomb Alumnae Office
provide leadership in fundraising for the Newcomb College Institute in collaboration with the university development office
serve as ex-officio member of the Newcomb Foundation Board which oversees all income derived from the Newcomb endowments from which the operating budget of the Newcomb College Institute is derived
The University seeks to appoint an exceptional individual with a passion for womens education and a clear understanding of the crucial role that womens issues play both in research/creative communities and in society at large. The individual must help define and expand the ways women contribute to and inflect Tulanes stated mission to create, communicate, and conserve knowledge in order to enrich the capacity of individuals, organizations, and communities to think, to learn, and to act and lead with integrity and wisdom. The individual must also be an effective communicator with an appreciation of the federating function of the director of an interdisciplinary institute.
