Position: Art Historian, African art and visual culture Rank and Salary: Assistant Professor, Full-time, Tenure-track. Salary commensurate with experience. Starting Date: August, 2008 Qualifications: Candidate must have a Ph.D. by July 2008 in art history or a related field with a concentration in African art and visual culture. Other than African-American art, a secondary area, if relevant, might complement existing faculty members’ teaching and research fields in Medieval, 18th/19th Century, 20th/21st Century, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Latin American. Teaching experience beyond the level of teaching assistant is highly desirable. Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate and graduate art history courses in the area of specialty and participate in teaching rotations for the second part of the art history survey as well as undergraduate methodologies and a senior capstone seminar. Establish a program of research that leads to publication and seek external funding. Additional duties include advising undergraduate and graduate students and service to the College and University. The Program: The art history program consists of six tenured/tenure-track faculty members who work with approximately 75 undergraduate majors and 30 Master’s degree students with an integrated approach to its Western and Non-Western offerings. In addition to its undergraduate and graduate degrees, a post-baccalaureate certification in art museum education is also available. The Setting: The University of North Texas, with over 34,000 students, is located in Denton just north of the Dallas- Fort Worth-Denton metropolitan area. The College of Visual Arts and Design operates facilities in Denton, Dallas, and Fort Worth. The College is one of the largest and most comprehensive visual arts programs in the Southwest. With over 2,300 undergraduate students and 120 graduate students, it offers the BA, BFA, MA, MFA in 14 program areas: art education, art history, ceramics, communication design, drawing and painting, watercolor, fashion design, fibers, interior design, metalsmithing and jewelry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, interdisciplinary art and design studies, and visual arts studies with a Ph.D. offered in art education. The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area has rich cultural offerings that provide excellent research and professional opportunities for students and faculty. Among the many museums are the Amon Carter Museum, African-American Museum, Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum, Meadows Museum, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and Nasher Sculpture Center. The collections of the African-American Museum and Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas; Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth; The Menil Collection, Museum of Fine Arts and Texas Southern University, Houston and Museum of Texas Tech, Lubbock, include African art.
