H-Net: Preserving and Improving Access to Specialized Electronic Mailing List Archives
H-Net Digital Preservation Policies and Procedures
H-Net Archive, 1989-2008 Tape Insert
This tape contains an archive of postings to H-Net lists from 1989
through 2008. It also contains the software developed by H-Net to
provide web access to these postings on its production servers, as well
as preliminary documentation on how to make use of the material.
The tape was written with GNU Tar version 1.18 running on a system
running the Debian operating system (Lenny version) and Linux kernel
2.6.16.13. The tape drive was an HP Ultrium 3 drive, with firmware
version G27Z. Tar options were used to set the block size to 32
kilobytes and the tar file format to that defined in POSIX.1-2001. The
command was:
tar -c -v -f /dev/nst0 -b 64 --format=posix 1989-2008
For redundancy, the tape contains two copies of the data, separated by a
file mark.
Updates to internal documentation:
----------------------------------
The file 1989-2008/documentation/sha256sums contains SHA256 checksums of
all files written to this tape.
