The History of Women’s Writing in Turkey III: Halide Edip

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature and The Center for Modern Turkish Studies of Istanbul Sehir University are calling for papers for the third symposium in the series, The History of Women’s Writing in Turkey, this time dedicated to Halide Edip. With this two daylong international symposium, the organizers wish to contribute to the celebrations and commemoration of Halide Edip in 2014, the 50th anniversary of her passing.
The organizers invite papers addressing Halide Edip both as a novelist and a modern thinker in the context of literary and intellectual history. The paper submissions should include a one-page (300 words) abstract and a one-page resume (300 words). Both Turkish and English papers are welcome.
1. Reading Halide Edip in the context of gender and nationalism,
2. Thematic and structural analyses of Halide Edip’s novels in comparison to her contemporaries,
3. Halide Edip’s role and influence on the history of women’s writing in Turkey,
4. Historicizing Halide Edip’s literary and political thought and practice in her time and place.
