The presentation will introduce the principles of Plain Legal English, and will incorporate a workshop portion to practice their application. Sesquipedalianism will be prohibited, legalese avoided, and concise meaningful sentences produced. The goal is not to dumb down our translations, but rather to train ourselves to aim for clear, straightforward expressions that still hold true to the original Japanese. Problems related to using “shall,” redundancies, and wordiness will be examined. Group work will be part of the presentation so participants can learn from each other different approaches to complex legal writing.
