Saturday August 23, 2014 10 am Centers for New Horizons 4301 S. King Drive - Chicago, IL 60553
Chicago, IL 8/11/2014 - Bronzeville is one of the premiere ethnic neighbors in Chicago and indeed the world. Join the League of Extraordinary Planners and the Bronzeville Alliance Saturday, August 23rd for the deication of our first Bronzeville Legend Photo Mural " 'King' Nat at Home, 2014" one of several state of the art identity markers to be placed throughout the neighborhood commemorating Bronzeville's unparalleled historical legacy. Awards will be presented to 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell and others who helped fund the project.
According to University of Illinois 2011 Master of Urban Planning and Policy and project creator/producer Christopher Devins, this effort is designed to drive tourism to Bronzeville and promote economic development. “The Bronzeville Identity Initiative is a creative place-making campaign that will use large scale commercial ad quality public art installations to create a backdrop, an ambiance within which the community’s commercial and cultural activities can take place and as a magnet for tourism.”
He further explained that when you attend a museum exhibit you are encouraged to “exit through the gift shop” and leave some of your money behind. The idea is to transform Bronzeville into an outdoor museum that attracts visitors and to make its commercial corridors the gift shop. This will increase retail sales per square foot and offer chances to sell Bronzeville as a cultural and entertainment destination, leading to jobs and greater revitalization of the community.
The Bronzeville Alliance, a coalition of community individuals and agencies, along with Centers for New Horizons is sponsoring the launch of the initiative. John Owens, a lead organizer for the Alliance, as well as Director of Community Building for Centers for New Horizons said that, “The ID Project will help spur economic development, provide a powerful educational platform for local students, drive an increase in tourism and help inspire the entire community to come together around common issues that need to be addressed.”
Food will be served along with light entertainment and other surprises.
