The 20 Years On: Human Security at Crossroads Conference is a collective initiative between the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies (CPRS) at Coventry University, the Centre for Strategic Research and Analysis (CESRAN International), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Turkey, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNOCHA) and Kadir Has University in Istanbul.
This year’s conference will take place on 23-24 October 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey.
This year we are focussing on the 20th anniversary of human security since its conceptualisation by the UNDP report in 1994. Human security is a people-centred approach to global security which recognises that lasting peace and social justice cannot be achieved unless people are protected from threats to their rights and basic needs. Examples of threats to human security include violence and abuse of human rights, corruption and bad governance, disasters and climate change, and poverty and poor access to basic services.
The aim of the 20 Years On: Human Security at Crossroads conference is to critically explore the development of human security reflecting on and examining how human security has evolved both within theory and practice. How has policy impacted the way in which human security issues are theorised and implemented nationally, regionally, and globally? How do we operationalize and localise the human security agenda? What is the future of human security and where are we heading? The objective is to therefore provide a forum to explore how human security has developed within academic and policy realms and its future trajectories.
